Kant's philosophy regarding "persons as ends in themselves"?

Somethings are a "means" and somethings are "ends". Somethings have instrumental value (means), others have intrinsic value (end). to have friends as ends in themselves means you don't just use people to get something else. my car is a means to geting to work (work is the end). if i only drive to get to work, and for no othe reason, i am just using it to get something else. if i also like the sensation of driving just because its fun, it has become an end---because i drive just to drive. so a friend who is an end, is a friend you hang with just for the value of their company---you need no other reason to do it.
