What is the Legality of Stat Padding in High School Sports?

I was wondering about the legality of stat padding in high school. That is to say, a coach tells the newspaper and other sources that a kid got a triple double, and there is video evidence that he didn't come close to it. Scouts could look at this in the paper and be misled because the coach lied, and in the end it could hurt the kid because the stats show he is a different player than what he really is. Would this be slander, or is there another law out there this would fall under? Could the coach get in serious trouble for this and possibly lose his job? Thank you in advance for anyone who can provide me with some knowledge on this issue.
