If water pipes freeze up in cold weather, how do I get them to work again?

It iw supposed to go below freezing tonite & I have an outside well. I am afraid my pipes will freeze up. I was told to let the hose trickle a little water overnight. Will this keep pipes from freezing? How do I defrost them if they do freeze?
