Do I really need a Tripod??
A tripod will allow you to close aperture for greater depth of field and longer shutter speeds or "dragging" shutter for flowing effects of water falls. And when light seems to disappear in the evening, longer shutter speeds will buy a few more minutes of shooting in low light conditions. You may also find that a mono pod will suit your needs and is of course easier to pack for hiking. Imagine Ansel Adams hiking around with an 8x10 camera and of course large tripod! The one thing to look for in a tripod is 360 movement as well as an additional knuckle allowing you to tilt the camera portrait or landscape. You should look at the Monto line of tripods, but a 40$ wall mart special will allow you to experiment using the tripod features and invest in better equipment later if necessary. When using long lenses a tripod is essential...the length of the lens exaggerates hand movement exponentially.
