I have downloaded guitar FX effects processor. but how do i use it?

i hav downloaded guitar FX version 3.04(latest)...but i really dont know how to use it. my electric guitar is connected to mic in port but i really cant understand how to produce distortion, reverb, flanger etc sounds. there is a start on on the interface which plays some preset sound on n on. there are ons for delay increase n decrease, input , output, cpu %, n lot of select boxes on the left like noise gate, distortion plus, EQ, record wav file, playback wav file, delay etc etc. i really dont know wat to do with these. even after plugging my guitar in the mic in i just produce the normal sound. wat do i need to do to produce the effects??? detailed answer wud be appreciated
